Flagstaff, Ariz.-The Tigers fought hard against the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks, but were defeated with a final match score of 4-2. In the doubles events Pacific dropped the No. 2 and 3 positions to the Lumberjacks and as a result, did not complete the No. 1 position because the point had already been claimed by Arizona.
The singles events enabled the Tigers to regain their footing as they came back and won two of the six singles events. Sophomore Iveta Masarova competed in the No. 2 position today and her match was not completed because the match's fate had been decided. However the Tiger victories included, freshman Hana Ritterova making her debut in the No. 1 spot and sophomore Gergana Boncheva playing in the fifth slot.
Boncheva defeated opponent Alice Pacaut in straight sets with a confident score of 6-4, 7-5. Ritterova's match was also won in straight sets with a cool 6-4, 6-2 against Ghizelene Doballah.
At the conclusion of the match, Head Women's Tennis Coach Charlotte Scatliffe remarked, "The Lady Tigers had a day of learning. We showed great heart this weekend but had some slow starts in singles that ultimately proved to be the deciding factor of today's match. Once again Gergana Boncheva took care of business in her singles match giving her a 3-0 record this weekend. Hana Ritterova had an impressive win at #1 singles dismantling her opponent in a 6-4, 6-2 victory. We will be taking the lessons learned this weekend and apply them to our practices this week."
Pacific now holds a record of 5-3 and 0-0 in the Big West Conference. The Tigers will now gear up to face San Jose State on February 24th at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts at the University of the Pacific. The match is scheduled to take place at 1:00pm.
