Tigers Begin SoCal Road Trip At Cal State Northridge

The Pacific men's basketball team travels to Cal State Northridge for a 7:05 p.m. game on Thursday against the Matadors. The Tigers enter the game with a record of 4-10 overall, 0-3 in Big West Conference games. CSUN enters the game 4-9 overall, with a 1-2 mark in league games.

COACH BOB THOMASON:  Former Pacific basketball standout Bob Thomason (Pacific '71) is 407-300 (.575) in his 24th season as the head coach of his alma mater ... Thomason is the Big West all-time wins leader, surpassing Jerry Tarkanian after the 65-57 victory over Utah State on Dec. 3 ... Thomason has 229 Big West wins, which is the most in league history ... UC Riverside 64, Pacific 57: Pacific dropped another heartbreaker for their seventh straight loss on Saturday, January 7 at the Alex G. Spanos Center. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 4-10 and 0-3 in Big West Conference play, while the Highlanders improved to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in conference games. In a low-scoring affair in the early minutes, junior Markus Duran connected for a three-pointer at the end of the shot clock to tie the game at 5-5 with 15:22 left in the half. Both teams remained scoreless until UC Riverside's Martin made a jumper with 13:19 to break the tie and give the Highlanders a 7-5 lead. Duran dropped in a jump shot from the left side to tie the game again with 12:43 on the clock. UCR responded with consecutive threes, starting an 8-0 run that gave the Highlanders a 15-8 lead with 9:40 left in the half. The Tigers countered with a 6-0 run of their own, cutting the deficit to 15-13 with 7:07 left in the half. Pacific and UC Riverside exchanged baskets over the final 6:37, with the teams matching each other. Junior Trevin Harris scored seven of Pacific's last nine points, but the Tigers headed into the half down 25-22. UC Riverside's Kareem Nitoto and Tiger junior Travis Fulton each knocked down a pair of three-pointers to start the second half. A quick 5-0 run put UC Riverside up by eight points, but junior Lorenzo McCloud took advantage of space in the lane to drop in a basket and cut the UC Riverside lead to 36-30 with 16:24 remaining in the game. With 12:19 left on the clock, the Highlanders used a 7-0 run to go up 45-31, their largest lead of the game. The Tigers brought the deficit back down to single digits thanks to a 6-2 segment over the next three minutes, highlighted by four points off of junior Ross Rivera. The Highlanders took the lead back up to 12 (50-38) with 7:48 remaining. Over the next six minutes, the Tigers played their best basketball of the evening, outscoring UCR 19-9. Fulton and junior Colin Beatty each scored five points in the stretch as Fulton's three-point play made it 59-57 with 1:10 left to play. UCR's Nitoto scored a basket on the next possession to push the lead back to four (61-57). The Tigers missed six shots from the field in the final minute as the Highlanders snuck away with the victory. Harris scored a career-high 13 points to lead the Tigers, while Fulton added 13 points and a team-best six rebounds. UC Riverside finished the game shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 69.2 percent from behind the perimeter. The Highlanders outscored Pacific 16-6 in the paint and 6-0 off the fast break.

UC Irvine 73, Pacific 69: The Pacific Tigers dropped their sixth straight decision in a difficult loss to the UC Irvine Anteaters on Thursday, January 5 at the Alex G. Spanos Center. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 4-9 and 0-2 in Big West Conference play, while the Anteaters improve to 5-10, 2-1 in league play.

Pacific took an early 3-0 lead off of a three from junior Markus Duran, less than thirty seconds into the game. After a three from UC Irvine's Michael Wilder, junior Travis Fulton converted two straight offensive rebounds to give Pacific the 7-3 lead. Two Tiger baskets gave Pacific an 11-6 lead before UC Irvine's Wilder scored his third three-pointer of the game to make it 11-9. A 7-2 run put Pacific up 18-11, highlighted by Duran's second three-pointer of the half. The Tigers took a 35-27 lead with 6:04 left (their largest of the game), following an 8-2 run that was led by three points from junior Ross Rivera. The Tigers were unable to pull away from UC Irvine as two straight layups from the Anteaters cut the Pacific lead in half, making the score 35-31 with 5:13 left in the half. UCI finished the half on a 7-3 run, shaving Pacific's lead to one as the Tigers headed into the half leading 42-41. Fulton dropped in two straight three-pointers to give the Tigers a 48-43 lead. After Wilder responded to Fulton with a three-pointer of his own to make it 48-46 with 18:32 on the clock, neither team scored until 15:57 when junior Andrew Bock dropped in a pair of free throws. Duran added to the lead, dropping in a trey to give the Tigers a 53-46 advantage. The Anteaters knotted it up at 57-57 with 11:13 to play after an 11-4 run. Duran gave the Tigers a 60-57 lead on his fourth three-pointer of the night, but two consecutive Anteater jumpers gave UC Irvine their first lead of night at 61-60 with 9:06 left in the game. A quick 6-0 run by the Tigers including shot-clock beating shot from beyond the arc and a free throw by Rivera gave the Tigers a 66-61 lead. UC Irvine responded with five straight to tie the game for the third time at 66-66 with 4:34 left on the clock. A tip-in from UC Irvine's Adam Folker gave the Anteaters a 68-66 lead before Rivera tied the game with a jumper from just inside the arc. Folker went 1-for-2 from the line to give UC Irvine a 69-68 lead before Rivera tied the game yet again with his own free throw, knotting the game up at 69-all with 1:13 remaining in the game. Pacific would not score again, though, as Folker scored on a layup with a minute left and Derrick Flowers hit a pair of free throws with :11 seconds left seal it. Fulton recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Markus Duran posted 15 points and juniors Ross Rivera and Trevin Harris rounded out the players who scored in double digits, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. Pacific outscored UC Irvine 14-9 off of second-chance points and 12-7 off of turnovers.
