Tigers' Late Offensive Production Ensures Second Sweep of 2009, Finishing Off UC Davis 15-9

March 29, 2009

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - After sweeping Houston earlier this month at Klein Family Field, the Pacific baseball team finished off a second three-game sweep of UC Davis this time to win 15-9 on Sunday, March 29. The last time the Tigers swept two three-game series in the same season came back in 2005, when Pacific took three at Sacramento State and three from the familiar UC Davis Aggies to close out the year.

With the win Pacific hit the 10-win mark, improving to 10-12 on the year and maintained a perfect 3-0 record in Big West Conference play. The Aggies dropped to 3-17 overall and 0-3 in the Big West.

The victory also gave Pacific its first Big West Conference three-game sweep since the Tigers downed Cal State Northridge in three straight from May 26-28, 2006.

Trailing 1-0 as they came to the plate in the second, sophomore Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) and senior Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) blasted back-to-back doubles into the right field corner to knot the score at 1-1.

Pacific's next at-bat saw the Tigers plated three runs on three hits.  Sophomore Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) got things rolling with a triple to center.  He scampered home moments later on a wild pitch, one of 11 between the two teams.  Following a walk to senior Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) cracked his second home run in as many games, lifting Pacific to a 4-1 lead.

The two squads traded runs in the fourth, then UC Davis chased Pacific starter, junior Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) with four runs on four hits to claim a 6-5 lead.

The sixth saw Wideman deliver another double to right field, this time with one out.  Junior Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) singled to shortstop, chasing Wideman to third.  Then another wild pitch tied the game once again at 6-6.

UC Davis notched single runs in the sixth and the seventh to take an 8-6 lead, but Pacific had one more offensive surge left.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pacific plated six runs on four hits and three walks.   With one out in the inning, Martin pulled the Tigers within a run on his first home run as a Tiger, a solo shot over the center field wall.  Wideman followed with his third double of the game.  That brought in a new pitcher for the Aggies, Scott Lyman.  Pacific promptly drew three consecutive walks, with Wideman coming around to score on two wild pitches.  The top of the lineup, Longmire and Centanni cleaned up the bases.  Longmire delivered a two-run double to right, then Centanni laced a two-run single to right-center, giving Pacific a 12-8 lead.

The Tigers went on to add three more runs in the eighth and claimed the sweep with a 15-9 win.

Junior David Rowse (Pleasanton, Calif.) earned his first win of 2009 for Pacific, allowing one run on five hits in 2.1 innings of relief.  Senior Mark McCain (Dallas, Texas) nabbed his first save of the year, coming on with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and getting out of the jam unharmed.

Lyman (0-1) took the loss for UC Davis, giving up seven runs on four hits and four walks in one inning.

The Tigers were led by Wideman, who went 5-for-5 with three doubles to push his career count to 35, tying him as the eighth-best doubles hitter in Pacific history.

Pacific next returns to action on Monday, March 30, when they close out their homestand and host Stanford at 5:35 p.m.
