The Pacific men's basketball team picked up a convincing 79-49 win over Sacramento State on Saturday, December 12 at the Spanos Center. With the win Pacific improved to 7-2 overall while the Hornets fell to 4-7 on the year.
The Tigers trailed 6-5 in the early going, but turned it around quickly, getting a layup by senior Michael Nunnally (Stockton, Calif.) and a jumper from junior Terrell Smith (Federal Way, Wash.) to make it a 9-6 Tiger lead with 16:33 to play in the first half. Pacific would not trail again in the half, as they used an 18-2 run midway through the first half featuring two three-pointers from junior Demetrece Young (Oklahoma City, Okla.) to lead it 36-16. The Tigers extended the lead to 47-24 at the break on a last second three-pointer from junior Pat Eveland (San Diego, Calif.), as Pacific set a season high for points in a half.
Pacific held the Hornets without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the second half, as Sacramento State missed its first seven shots of the second half. The Tigers used a 14-3 run to extend their lead to 61-27 with 12:28 to play in the game. Pacific's lead would not fall below 26 the rest of the way. The Hornets had a late 12-0 run to cut the Tigers' lead to 75-49, but the Tigers scored the final four points of the game on a pair of free throws and a layup by freshman Stephon Lamar (San Diego, Calif.).
Young led the Tigers with 12 points, while Nunnally and junior Sam Willard (Pierre, S.D.) each added 10 points for Pacific. The Tigers had 13 steals in the game, led by a career-high three grabs from freshman Allen Huddleston (Merced, Calif.). The 13 steals tied for the sixth highest single game total in school history.
