Tigers Drop Exhibition to Humboldt State, 96-84

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team dropped its only exhibition game of the 2009-10 season to Humboldt State 96-84 Saturday night. The two teams were evenly matched in the fast-paced, high scoring game, but Humboldt State shot 81 percent from the free throw line in the second half to help secure the win.

Sophomore Christina Thompson (Sacramento, Calif.) had a breakout game, finishing with her first collegiate double-double of 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Junior Jennifer Fath (Carrollton, Texas) led all Tigers with 22 points. She also finished with eight rebounds and six assists. Junior Gretchen Tiernan (Roseville, Calif.) rounded out the Tigers in double-digits with 14 points of her own.

Pacific led by as much as 11 in the first half off a jumper by Thompson five and half minutes into play. Sophomore point guard Eliza Dy (Chino Hills, Calif.) kicked off the scoring by draining a three-pointer within the first 35 seconds of the game.

Pacific broke the 20-point barrier first, when senior center Emma Head (San Diego, Calif.) knocked down a lay-up from Dy at 11:58. Pacific used the shot to go ahead 21-13. Up until that point, that was Pacific's largest margin until the Lumberjacks started to crawl back into the game.

But the Lumberjacks would fight back to within four, 37-33, on a three pointer by Andrea Bobic with 1:53 to go in the half. Humboldt State then capped off an 8-0 run from the free throw line going 5-for-6 to pull ahead of Pacific 39-38 with 34 seconds on the clock.

Thompson hit a jumper in the paint with seven seconds to go to give the Tigers the 39-38 going into the half.

During the second half, trailing by one, Dy sunk another three at 18:35, to put Pacific ahead 42-40. Head then followed up with a put-back lay-up with 18:10 remaining in the game and gave Pacific its final lead, 44-40.

Brittney Taylor took over the game for the Lumberjacks, putting up 23 points and seven rebounds in the second half. She finished with a game-high 26 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double of her own.

The second half saw five ties before the Lumberjacks took the lead and pulled away. Pacific would get as close as 86-79 with 2:35 remaining. Humboldt State led by as much as 14 in the final minutes of play to earn the win.

The Tigers open their regular schedule at home against Montana State on Sunday, Nov. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
