The Pacific baseball team pounded out 17 hits on the way to an 8-2 non-conference victory over Santa Clara on Tuesday, May 20, at Schott Stadium. The Tigers improve to 14-38, while the Broncos fall to 33-22.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, as sophomore Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) belted his third home-run of the year, a two-run shot to right field.
Pacific added another run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Bronco reliever Alex Rivers gave up three straight singles to begin the inning. After an out was recorded, Nate Garcia came on in relief and walked senior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) to plate Walker for Pacific's third run.
The Tigers got an outstanding start from junior Larry Holscher (McArthur, Calif.) in just his third start of the year. He pitched five scoreless innings for the Tigers, before allowing a run scoring single to Jon Karcich in the bottom of the sixth inning. He pitched a career-high 5 2-3 innings, giving up one run and striking out three.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Tigers got two-out RBI singles from senior Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) and junior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning.
Santa Clara struck back in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Conan to make the score 5-2.
Back-to-back doubles by Walker and freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Mike McKeever's (San Diego, Calif.) team-leading sixth home run made it 8-2 in the ninth inning.
Walker was on base five times for the Tigers, with four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. McKeever was also on base all five times. He was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Holscher picked up the win for Pacific, improving to 2-4 on the season. Santa Clara starter Justin Keuhn allowed two runs in three innings to take the loss and fall to 1-3 on the year.
The Tigers are next in action with a game at Oregon State on Friday, May 23. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
