March 11, 2008

Box Score

Sacramento, Calif. - Despite scoring four runs in the first three innings, the Pacific Baseball team fell to Sacramento State, 14-6, on Tuesday, Mar. 12.

Pacific dropped to 2-11 on the season, while Sacramento State moved to 3-8.

Junior Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) got the Tigers on the board first with a two-run double to left. McKeever plated senior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who reached on an error, and frehsman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.), who walked.

Unfortunately the Tigers gave the lead away over the next two innings as an error led to a Sacramento State run in the first, then two misplays helped the Hornets tally two runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead.

Pacific came right back with two runs of their own in the top of the third as pinch-hitter J.B. Brown singled, then Longmire walked. A ground out from senior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) moved runners to second and third. Brown scored on a passed ball, while Longmire moved to third. Moments later junior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) drive home Longmire on a single to right to reclaim the lead at 4-3.

In his first collegiate start, freshman Thomas Berolzheimer (Stockton, Calif.) struggled in the third inning. Sacramento State sent 12 men to the plate in the inning, chasing Berolzheimer and senior reliever Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) as the Hornets scored eight runs on six hits and four walks to grab an 11-4 lead. The big blow for Sacramento State was a grand slam off the bat of Gabe Jacobo.

The game moved quickly until the eighth inning as Pacific scratched across two runs on RBI singles from Ching and Brown.

Sacramento State, however, closed the door with a three-run home run from Wes Oberlin in the bottom half of the innings.

Hornet reliever Trevor Paine (1-0) earned the victory with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit and one walk.

Berolzheimer (0-2) suffered the loss (0-2) allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk.

Ching and Brown led the Pacific offense with two hits each.

The Tigers hit the field and the road again tomorrow as Pacific travels to San Francisco to take on the San Frnacisco Dons at 2 p.m.
