Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Baseball team suffered its third consecutive defeat as the Tigers fell to Washington, 10-1, on Friday, Feb. 29.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-4 on the season, while Washington evened its mark at 3-3.
Washington took advantage of two costly Pacific errors in the early going to build a 5-0 lead through three and a half innings. Shortstop Pierce Rankin capped their Huskies early offense with a two run home run in the top of the fourth inning.
That proved to be enough runs for the Huskies as the Tigers struggled to string together hits.
The Tigers first cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Trailing 10-0, junior Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) ripped a double down the left field line, sending junior Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) to third. McKeever reached moments earlier on a fielder's choice. A walk to freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) loaded the bases and with two outs in the inning, senior Noah St. Urbain (Stockton, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to force home McKeever. Unfortunately the Pacific rally stopped there as the Tigers fell, 10-1.
Pacific starter, junior Cole Akins (Seattle, Wash.) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight htis and one walk in 6.1 innings to fall to 0-2.
Washington's Nick Haughian (1-0) earned his first win of the season, scattering seven hits and a walk in six innings of work.
Wideman led the Tigers offense with three hits in four at-bats.
The Tigers and Huskies continue their three game series on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 2 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
