Nov. 4, 2008

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Led by a combined 40 kills from outside hitters senior Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.), junior Mallori Gibson (Bakersfield, Calif.) and sophomore Svenja Engelhardt (Sinsheim, Germany) the Pacific women's remained perfect at home, sweeping past Sacramento State, 3-0, on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The victory lifted Pacific to 8-13 on the season and 7-0 in the Alex G. Spanos Center. Sacramento State, meanwhile, fell to 8-18 on the season.

The first set of the night set the tone for the entire match as Engelhardt dominated. Svenja posted seven kills without an error on 12 attempts in the first set to lead Pacific to a 25-18 win. The Tigers, however, stumbled out of the gate. Pacific trailed 7-5 early in the first set, but the Tigers outscored Sacramento State 13-3 to grab an 18-10 advantage. Although the Hornets were able to pull within four points at 22-18, Pacific slammed the door shut with a kill by senior setter Shannon Krug (Colorado Springs, Colo.) followed by solo blocks from senior Natalia Tomaszewska (Marklowice, Poland) and Engelhardt.

The Tigers momentum carried into the second set as two Engelhardt service aces as well as a block and a kill from Gibson pushed Pacific out to an early 4-0 lead. The Tigers went on to lead 8-1 and rolled to an easy 25-14 win in the second set. Anderson and Engelhardt led Pacific as both Pacific outside hitters delivered five kills on nine swings in set number two.

The third set was by far the most competitive, but Gibson drove the nails in the coffin with eight kills on 11 swings. Tied at 3-3 early in the set, Pacific earned the separation they would need on kills by Tomaszewska, Gibson and Anderson to make it 6-3. The Tigers' lead fell no lower than two points the rest of the way, despite Sacramento State posting a team-high .258 hitting percentage (11 kills and three errors on 31 attempts). Pacific, meanwhile, finished the third set with a match-high .385 hitting average (20 kills and five errors on 39 attempts).

Gibson finished with a match-high 15 kills, while Engelhardt had 14 kills and Anderson posted 11 kills.

Desiree Hoyum and Maddison Thivierge led Sacramento State with six kills in the match.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, Nov. 7 as Pacific faces UC Riverside in Riverside, Calif. at 7 p.m.
