Tigers Open Men's Basketball Exhibition Season With 79-58 Win Over Cal State Stanislaus

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team opened their 2008-09 exhibition season with a 79-58 victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday, Nov. 2.

Pacific jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first four minutes of the game, as five different Tigers scored. The Warriors came back with a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 13-9, but Pacific responded with an 8-0 run keyed by three-pointers from senior Chad Troyer (Seattle, Wash.) and junior Lavar Neufville (Fairfield, Calif.) to take the lead to 21-9. After a Cal State Stanislaus three-pointer from Michael Dyson, the Tigers used a 6-0 run led by four points from junior Royal Edwards (Sacramento, Calif.) to take the lead to 27-12 8:59 left in the half. The Tigers kept the lead in double digits the rest of the half and led 39-24 at the break.

Pacific outscored the Warriors 13-6 over the first five minutes of the second half to take a 52-30 lead after a layup by senior Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.). Cal State Stanislaus went on a 12-3 run to cut the Tiger lead to 55-42 with 10:25 remaining. That was as close as the Warriors would get, as another Tiger burst - this time a 17-7 spurt that took the lead to 23 (72-49) with 4:49 and would seal the victory.

Junior Joe Ford (Altadena, Calif.) had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers, who out-rebounded the Warriors 47-17. The Tigers did not allow an offensive rebound until the 8:25 mark of the second half, giving up just three offensive boards in the game. Senior James Doran (Cameron Park, Calif.) had 12 points for Pacific, getting 10 points in the second half. Brown was the only other Tiger in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Pacific concludes their exhibition season on Saturday, Nov. 8 as the Tigers host Chico State at 7:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
