Tigers Place Above Big West Rivals in 2008 Pacific Invitational

Oct. 18, 2008

Final Stats

Stockton, Calif. - Seniors Jun Huang (Guangzhou, China) and Jenny Lewis (Hesperia, Calif.) went 1-3 in two events for the women's swimming team, helping Pacific to 507.5 overall points and a fourth-place finish with the addition of two more teams in Day Two of the 2008 Pacific Invitational. UC Davis and Stanford entered the mix on Oct. 18, as the men improved their totals from Friday and emerged with 486 total points and a third-place finish.

Though the women finished above UC Davis, they were within reach of third place after falling below Nevada by only eight points at the end of the Invitational.

In men's action, freshman Kevin Byers (Puyallup, Wash.) turned in another impressive finish to accompany his third-place finish in the 400 IM yesterday.

He completed the 200 IM in ninth place (1:59.33) in a field of 23 swimmers, and then topped that finish in the 200 Back, when he touched the wall in 1:57.69 to record yet another top 10 finish.

Similarly, junior Patrick Walton (Lodi, Calif.) brought in another top 10 finish for Pacific, when he recorded a 53.05 time in the 100 Fly for a seventh-place spot. In the 200 Breast he took a ninth with a 2:15.26 time.

The men's best relay efforts on the day came in the 200 Free Relay and the 800 Free Relay, when the Tigers snagged two fourth-place finishes for times of 1:27.71 and 7:18.99, respectively.

Huang started off Day Two well, with a first-place time of 57.12, her fastest of the season, in her second event of the day, the 100 Back. She separated herself from the third swimmer, Lewis, by only one second, as the top-three times were very narrowly determined.

Lewis and Huang gave Pacific a second 1-3 push in the second backstroke event, the 200 Back. Huang gave herself a little more breathing room in that race, when she recorded a 2:03.20 finish in first place, ahead of Washington State's Afton Pickett (2:05.80) and Lewis' 2:07.23 finish.

Starting off the day, the Tigers secured yet another top three finish in the women's 200 Free Relay. A little over one second behind Washington State's first-place 1:36.54 speed, senior April Woo (Honolulu, Hawaii) touched the wall for Pacific in 1:37.89. Joined by Huang, Lewis and junior Devonie Migues (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), Pacific came in third behind Oregon State.

The enormous outing continued into the women's 500 Free, when freshman Jayme Swalin (Kenmore, Wash.) repeated another third-place finish with a time of 5:03.97. She pulled up just ahead of junior KC Albiston (Salt Lake City, Utah) who recorded a fourth-place time of 5:05.43.

In the women's final race of the day, the 800 Free Relay, Pacific continued on its top-three theme after a 7:49.12 in the event of 11 relay teams.
