Pacific Wins at Cal State Bakersfield, 67-58

Bakersfield, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team improved to 10-4 with a 67-58 win at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, Jan. 5. The Roadrunners fell to 3-12 with the loss.

In the first half, the Tigers took an early 9-2 lead, hitting three three-pointers. Junior Steffan Johnson (Kent, Wash.) scored six of his 14 first half points in the run, hitting two treys. The Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 16-16 with 11:07 remaining, and it was tied again at 22-22 with 7:48 left. It was at that point that the Tigers took control of the first half, outscoring the Roadrunners 14-2 over the remainder of first period. As time expired in the first half, Johnson nailed a 30-footer to complete the momentum swing at the end of the period.

Cal State Bakersfield made a few runs at the Tigers in the second half, including the closest they would get at 51-45 with 7:35 remaining after a 6-0 run. After trading baskets to make it 53-47, the Tigers scored four points in a row to take the lead back to 10. Pacific`s lead would not fall below eight the rest of the way.

The Roadrunners out-rebounded the Tigers 37-32, the first time this season Pacific has won when trailing in that category. Cal State Bakersfield bested Pacific 24-14 on the boards in the second half, including 11 second half rebounds.

Johnson led the Tigers with 17 points and had five assists. Junior Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.) added 14 points and junior Michael Nunnally (Stockton, Calif.) had 11 points for Pacific. Sophomore Joe Ford (Altadena, Calif.) led the Tigers with seven rebounds.

Terrence Johns led the Roadrunners with 22 points.

Pacific is next in action at Long Beach State on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7:05 p.m.
