STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific women's volleyball team improved to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in Big West Conference action with a 30-16, 30-25, 30-22 victory over UCSB (5-10, 0-3 Big West) on Friday, Sept. 28, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Game one saw the Tigers deliver one of their best performances in several years as Pacific notched 15 kills and did not make a single error on 22 attempts for a .682 hitting percentage. UC Santa Barbara, meanwhile, posted just 10 kills and committed 11 errors as Pacific breezed to a 30-16 win in game one. Freshman Svenja Engelhardt (Sinsheim, Germany) and junior Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the team with four kills each in the game.
The Tigers momentum carried over into game two as Pacific committed just one error through the middle of the game to build a 23-13 lead. The Gauchos staged a late rally and closed to within four points at 28-24 but the Tigers closed the door with a 30-25 win. Sophomore Meagan MimMack (Upland, Calif.) paced the Tigers in the second game with four kills on five swings.
Following the break, Pacific once again came out of the locker room with an intensity that the Gauchos simple could not match as the Tigers raced out to a 10-3 lead. However, following a timeout from UCSB head coach Kathy Gregory, the Gauchos reponded with 13 of the next 19 points to tie the game at 16-16. After trading four points, Pacific regained the lead behind a kill from senior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.), followed by an ace from Hilbers to make it 20-18. Engelhardt pushed the Pacific lead to three with her 10th kill of the match and Pacific never looked back as the Tigers swept the match with a 30-22 win.
Engelhardt led the Tigers with 11 kills and notched her second career double-double with 10 digs. Anderson and MimMack each finished with 10 kills for the Tigers, while senior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) posted a match-high 20 digs.
UC Santa Barbara's Lauren McLaughlin led the Gauchos with eight kills and 10 digs in the match.
Pacific returns to the floor on Saturday, Sept. 29 as the Tigers host No. 20 Cal Poly at 7 p.m. in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
