The Pacific women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to the No. 13 Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Coors Classic in Fort Collins, Col.
Game scores for the match were, 22-30, 21-30 and 31-33.
The Tigers dropped to 1-1 on the season, while Ohio State improved to 4-1.
Coming off an upset 3-0 loss to Colorado State in the opener of the Coors Classic, the 13th-ranked Buckeyes were focussed from the first serve as Ohio State bolted out to a 13-8 lead in the first game. The Tigers, however, showed no fear of their ranked opponent, rattling off five straight points to tie the contest at 13-13. Pacific's defense keyed the run of points as the Tigers forced Ohio State into three straight hitting errors to pull within two at 13-11. Freshman Svenja Engelhardt (Sinsheim, Germany) knotted the game at 13 with back-to-back kills in her first action of the season.
Unfortunately the Buckeyes were able to regroup and reclaim the lead as Ohio State scored 13 of the next 18 points to build a 26-18 advantage before taking game one, 30-22. Ohio State held the Tigers to just a .119 hitting percentage as Pacific committed eight errors on 42 attempts.
The Buckeyes' momentum from game one carried into the second game as Ohio State sprinted out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back. Pacific hit just .061 in the second game with 12 kills and 10 errors on 33 swings. Ohio State, meanwhile, posted their best hitting percentage of the match at .412 with 17 kills and just three errors on 34 attempts. Ohio State claimed game two, 30-21.
Following the break, the Tigers regained their composure and their defensive intensity as Pacific limited Ohio State to just 15 kills, while forcing eight errors on 52 swings for a .135 percentage. The improved defense helped Pacific build a 27-23 lead late in game three. The Tigers, however, faded down the stretch against their ranked foe as Ohio State earned the sweep with a 33-31 win over the Tigers in game three.
Pacific senior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) led the Tigers with 13 digs in the match, while junior Kara Uhl (Cypress, Calif.) posted a team-high 12 kills.
Danielle Meyer led Ohio State with a match-high 15 kills and just missed a double-double, notching nine digs.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 1 as Pacific concludes play at the Coors Classic against host Colorado State at 6 p.m. (PST).
