Seattle, Wash. - The Pacific baseball team fell to Pac-10 foe Washington in a doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 6-5 (11) on Saturday, March 10th at Husky Ballpark.
With the losses, the Tigers fall to 5-14-1 on the season while the Huskies improve to 7-8.
In game one, Washington starter Jorden Merry allowed just two hits over seven and a third innings of work, as the Tigers were held to three hits total for the game. Pacific junior Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) connected on two of the Tiger hits, while sophomore Erik Hamren (Coto de Caza, Calif.) pitched one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief for the Tigers.
In game two, the Tigers fired right out of the gate as, following a walk by junior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), sophomore Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) connected on a double, plating Ching to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Washington rallied back as catcher Joey Dunn hit a solo homerun leading off the bottom of the third to tie the game back at 1-1.
Pacific struck again in the top of the fourth as Ching reached on an error by Husky shortstop Brian Pearl that allowed senior Clint Eastman (Pleasanton, Calif.) to cross the plate to make the score 2-1. The Tigers added insurance in the top of the sixth as sophomore John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) and freshman Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) connected on back to back infield singles, and junior Denis Hill (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) singled to center to plate Joines to make the score 3-1. In the top of the seventh Pacific struck again as, following back to back walks from Baum and sophomore Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) and a wild pitch advancing them to second and third, sophomore Zach Chamberlin hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated Baum to make the score 4-1.
Washington came right back in the bottom half of the inning as they plated two runs to pull back to within one at 4-3. Pacific added more insurance in the top of the ninth as following an infield single by Baum where he advanced to second on a throwing error, Centanni completed a sacrifice bunt moving Baum to third. Chamberlin then connected on an infield single between the mound and first base, plating Baum for his second RBI of the game to make the score 5-3.
The Huskies came back in the bottom on the ninth to score two runs to tie the game up at 5-5 to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Matt Hague singled to lead off the inning, and following a sacrifice bunt by Matt Stevens, Ty Rasmussen singled to center field to score Hague and give Washington the victory.
Pacific got a strong outing from freshman Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.), who pitched six strong innings allowing just two runs, while striking out four and walking none.
Pacific returns to action on Tuesday, March 13th as they travel to Sacramento State for a single mid-week matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm
