Pacific Slips Against Cal State Northride, 76-73

Feb. 24, 2007

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Calvin Chitwood came off the bench to score 19 points Saturday, including the final free throw with 13.5 seconds to play, to lift Cal State Northridge to a 76-73 victory over Pacific.

The Matadors (14-14, 5-7 Big West) blew most of an 11-point lead in the final four minutes, and Solomon Horsechief's 3-pointer with 1:48 to play put Pacific (11-15, 5-6) down 69-67.

Chitwood tipped in a Jason Hill miss to give Northridge a four-point lead, and Rai Colston and Chitwood made enough free throws to keep Northridge ahead despite HorseChief's best intentions.

HorseChief scored 12 of his team-high 15 points in the final 3:26. But instead of taking a 3-pointer to tie in the final seconds, he drove the lane and missed a layup, ending Pacific's three-game win streak this season and nine straight victories against Northridge dating back to 2004.

The Matadors took 23 more free throws than the Tigers (41-18) and made 26, compared to 15 for Pacific.

Jonathan Heard scored 16 points off the bench for Northridge, including a steal and a two-handed slam dunk with 1:15 remaining that put the Matadors back ahead by four, 73-69, after C.J. Morgan made two free throws.

Thomas Shewmake added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Northridge.

Michael White scored 14 points for the Tigers, Morgan had 13 points and Anthony Brown had 11 points.
