Pacific Fends Off Nevada, 70-66

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 70-66 victory over Nevada (2-4) on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Pacific led by as many as nine points in the first half, as they used a 13-5 over a five minute stretch to lead 29-20 with 7:41 left. The Wolf Pack outscored the Tigers 19-11 the rest of the half, including nine points from Marcellus Kemp.

The Tigers built the lead back up to eight (52-44), but Nevada used a 12-2 run to take took its only lead of the second half at 56-54 with 8:16 to play. Pacific then took control with a 15-0 run over the next seven minutes to gain a 69-56 lead with 1:04 left after a free throw by sophomore Joe Ford (Altadena, Calif.). The Tigers missed the next six free throws as the Wolf Pack cut the lead to 69-66 with two seconds remaining. Junior Chad Troyer (Seattle, Wash.) hit one of two free throws to seal the victory for Pacific.

Troyer led the Tigers with 19 points. Juniors Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.) and Steffan Johnson (Kent, Wash.) each scored 13 points for Pacific. Brown added 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Junior Michael Nunnally (Stockton, Calif.) added 10 points.

Kemp scored a game-high 20 points to lead Nevada.

Pacific held Nevada to a .371 field goal percentage (23-62), including just 2-of-13 shooting from three-point range in the second half. The Tigers shot just .576 from the free throw line (19-33), and made just 11 of 20 free throws after halftime, including just four of 11 in the final 2:40.

The Tigers are next in action at San Francisco on Wed., Dec. 5 at 8:30 p.m.
