Stockton, Calif. - Junior forwards Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.) and Bryan LeDuc (Corona, Calif.) dominated the paint with 16 points each as the Pacific men's basketball team defeated local rival Sacramento State, 75-62, on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
The victory lifted the Tigers to 4-1 on the season, while Sacramento State fell to 1-4 overall.
The Tigers got off to a fast start in the game, scoring the first six points on a three-pointer from junior Chad Troyer (Seattle, Wash.), a free throw from sophomore Joe Ford (Altadena, Calif.) and a thunderous dunk from junior Michael Nunnally (Stockton, Calif.). Pacific would not relinquish the lead, but it was a battle.
Nunnally scored 11 of his 12 points in the first half, as the Tigers led 23-9 with 8:51 remaining in the period. The Hornets responded by outscoring the Tigers 14-9 the rest of the half, to cut the lead to 32-23 at the break.
Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Hornets would use a 13-8 run cut the lead to four (40-36). Leading scorer Loren Leath scored nine of his team-high 18 points in that surge. The Tigers score the next seven points to get the lead back up to 11, but Sacramento State made one last push to cut the lead to four again (52-48) with 9:13 remaining in the game. Pacific then used an 12-1 run over the next five minutes to take the lead back to 64-49, with LeDuc scoring the first 10 points in the run. The Tigers would not lead by less than nine the rest of the way.
Brown had 16 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and 12th of his career. Ford scored nine points and led Pacific with three blocks and four steals.
Pacific returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 24 as Pacific travels to St. Louis, Mo. to take on the Saint Louis Bilikens at 5 p.m. (PT).
