Nov. 20, 2007

Box Score

San Jose, Calif. - Junior Janae Young (Sacramento, Calif.) drove the lane and lifted the Pacific women's basketball team to a thrilling, 75-74, overtime victory at San Jose State on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The victory lifted Pacific to 3-1 on the season, while San Jose State fell to 0-4 overall.

Trailing 71-63 with 3:01 remaining in the extra period, the Tigers outscored the host Spartans 12-3 to earn the slim victory.

Junior point guard Amy VanHollebeke (San Diego, Calif.) got the Tigers rally going with a driving layup with 2:51 left in overtime. On the next possession, Young blocked a layup by the Spartans Brittany Powell, keeping the Pacific deficit at six points. Young continued to make an impact moments later, nailing a 12-foot jumper to pull the Tigers within four at 71-67 with 2:17 left.

Following an errant three pointer from San Jose State, Pacific sophomore Jake Kelly (Fair Oaks, Calif.) brought the Tigers within a point at 71-70 with 1:49 remaining.

The Tigers regained possession on a block by sophomore Emma Head (San Diego, Calif.), then VanHollebeke drained two free throws to give Pacific a 72-71 lead with 1:11 on the clock.

A quick layup by San Jose State's Alisha Hicks gave the lead right back to the Spartans at 73-72, but Kelly answered for the Tigers with a short jumper from the left side to reclaim the lead at 74-73.

Just 20 seconds remaining in the extra period, San Jose State guard Myosha Barnes sank one of two free throws to tie the game again at 74-74.

With the final possession of the overtime, the Tigers called a timeout. Head coach Lynne Roberts turned to Young and gave the junior college transfer an opportunity to drive the lane and either sink the game winner or draw contact.

With time winding down, Young did exactly that, drawing contact from San Jose State's Powell to get to the line. Young's first shot dropped through the cylinder cleanly, than she missed the second on purpose to force San Jose State to grab a rebound and try a desperate shot.

The Spartans final try failed as the Tigers collected their second road victory of the season.

Both teams made early runs during the first half as San Jose State held a 15-9 lead. The Tigers responded with a 15-2 run led by three-pointers from Young, Kelly and senior Kelsey Lavender (Lake Oswego, Ore.). Pacific went on to push their lead to as much as 10 points at 31-21 and took a 35-30 lead into halftime.

As the Tigers did in overtime, San Jose State overcame an eight-point deficit in the second half. Pacific led 63-55 with 3:19 remaining in regulation, but the Spartans got back-to-back layups from Powell to get within four at 63-59. Two free throws from Natalie White made it a one possession game with 1:27 left, then Barnes tied the game at 63-63 on a jumper with 57 seconds the clock.

VanHollebeke led the Tigers with 20 points, while freshman Andrea Swanson (Littleton, Colo.) added 19. Young finished the night with 14 points, while Kelly rounded out the Tigers in double figures with 10 points.

Powell led the Spartans with a game-high 23 points.

Pacific returns to the floor on Wednesday, Nov. 28 as the Tigers host Saint Mary's at 7 p.m. in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
