Tigers Second Half Surge Not Enough To Outdo Mustangs On The Road

Jan. 25, 2007

Box Score

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Despite a furious rally to start the second half, the Pacific women's basketball team fell to Cal Poly, 77-62, on Thursday, January 25, on the road at Mott Gym. The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in conference action while the Mustangs improved to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the Big West.

From the opening whistle the Tigers struggled to find their offense as they were without a basket for the first four minutes of the contest. Despite the opening drought, Pacific was only down four points after the first four minutes of the game, closing to within one after a three-pointer by junior Kelsey Lavender (Lake Oswego, Ore.). In what appeared to be a spark for the Tigers actually seemed to spark the Mustangs as from that point on Cal Poly steadily built their lead into a 13 point halftime deficit.

Down 42-29 at the break, Pacific came out flying in the second half, cutting the 13 point halftime deficit to just two points at 47-45 through the first six minutes of the second half. Pacific's onslaught came from all angles as six different players hit, led by four points from junior Tyler Moran (Carmel, Calif.).

With multiple chances to even the game, miss guided passes and a few calls that went the other way halted the Tigers second half push allowing the Mustangs to regroup and get back on track themselves. With the game basically even, the Mustangs rolled off eight straight points to push their lead to 10 points, never looking back until the final buzzer sounded.

On the night, senior Jerise Freeman (Wichita, Kan.) posted 14 points, one short of her season high to lead the Tigers. Sophomore Whitney Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) posted a career-best 11 points in the loss, hitting the double-digit mark for the first time in her career. In addition, Price posted four assists on the night while the Tigers tallied just six assists total.

For Cal Poly, Jessica Eggleston led the way with a game-high 24 points on nearly perfect shooting as she was 7-for-9 from the floor, 3-of-3 from behind the arc and 7-of-9 from the free throw stripe. Megan Harrison added 13 points in the effort.

The Tigers continue Big West play on Saturday, January 27 as they travel to Santa Barbara to take on UC Santa Barbara at 2:00 pm.
