Sacramento, Calif. - An unfortunate trend continued for the Pacific women's volleyball team as the Tigers found themselves on the wrong side of key stretches in each game in a 3-0 loss to Sacramento State on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-9 on the season, while Sacramento State moved to 10-3.
Games scores for the match were: 30-18, 30-22, 30-21.
Pacific battled the nine-time defending Big Sky champion Hornets stride for stride through the middle of the first game, trailing by just three points, 15-12, at the media timeout. The Hornets, however, scored nine of the next ten points to build a 24-13 lead. Sacramento State went on to take game one 30-18 as the Hornets out hit Pacific, .300 to .091.
Game two followed a similar pattern as the Tigers held a 17-15 lead following a tip kill from sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.). Once again, Sacramento State rallied as the Hornets claimed 12 of the next 16 points to take control of game two at 27-21. Sacramento State took a two game lead with a 30-22 win in game two.
For the third consecutive time the two teams stayed close through the media timeout in game three as Sacramento State held a slim 15-13 edge. However, Sacramento State used a 5-1 run to take a 20-14 lead and went on to take the match 30-21.
Despite the loss, the Tigers saw positive signs from senior Jennifer Knox (Macungie, Pa.), who had five kills in six swings, and freshman Masha Vaysburg (Livermore, Calif.), who notched four kills, four digs and led the Tigers with five blocks.
Junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb,) led the Tigers offensively with 10 kills in the match.
Sacramento State's Atlee Hubbard led all attackers with 14 kills in the match.
Pacific returns to the court on Thursday, Sept. 14 as the Tiger host No. 10 California in the opening match of the Asics Invitational at 7 p.m. in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
