Aug. 27, 2006

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Behind two goals and an assist from senior Kelsey Nagel (Lynnwood, Wash.) the Pacific women's soccer team shutout the visiting Long Island Blackbirds, 3-0, on Sunday, August 27. The win pushed the Tigers' record to 2-0 on the young season while the Blackbirds fell to 0-2.

For the second consecutive game, the Tigers' offense assaulted their opponents with constant pressure and 25 shots while the defense cracked down and held the Blackbirds to just five shots on the day. Additionally, the Tigers posted their second shutout in as many games, led by their senior captain defender Nagel and junior 'keeper Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.)

Not settling for just a strong defensive performance, Nagel showed off her offensive prowess with a career day. In the 33rd minute, Nagel put the Tigers ahead for good with a strike from distance off of a free kick that she blasted into the top of the goal. The goal was her first of the season.

Nagel tallied another point in the 72nd minute as she drove another free kick into the box that found the head of fellow senior captain Suzy Peterson (Granite Bay, Calif.). Peterson leaped above the Blackbirds' defense and forcefully redirected the pass past the near post. The goal was her first and the assist was Nagel's first of the season.

14 minutes later, Nagel put the finishing touches on her performance as she headed in her second goal of the day. The scoring chance was setup off of a Pacific corner kick that senior Jennifer Smiley (Carmichael, Calif.) bent into the back of the six yard box to Nagel. The assist was Smiley's first of the season.

Defensively, Souza posted four saves while Stephanie Kansky posted 11 saves for Long Island.

The Tigers will next be in action on Friday, September 1, as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on Colorado College. The game is scheduled for 3:00 pm (PT).
