Fresno, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers women's volleyball team fell to 0-3 on the season as the Tigers fell to No. 25 Kansas State, 3-0, on Sunday, Aug. 27.
Game scores for the match were 30-21, 30-20, 30-25. The victory lifted the Wildcats to 2-1 on the season.
The Tigers dug a hole for themselves in the first game as Pacific committed nine attack errors and a ball handling error to help lift Kansas State to a 21-11 lead. The Wildcats went on to take the first game, 30-21 as Kansas State outhit Pacific, .244 to .041.
Games two and three saw the best hitting percentages of the season for the Tigers as Pacific posted a .224 mark in game two, then hit at a .286 clip in game three. Despite falling 30-20, the Tigers slammed down 17 kills, while committing just six errors on 49 swings in the second game.
Unfortunately as the Tigers improved throughout the match, so did Kansas State. The Wildcats finished game two with a .280 hitting percentage, then topped the .300 mark with 20 kills and just three errors on 44 swings in the decisive game.
Pacific's best performance came in the final game as the Tigers forced 15 ties, including the final tie at 21-21. A four-point Wildcat rally turned the tide in game three as Kansas State took advantage of back-to-back kills from sophomore Ginta Gabruseva, followed by back-to-back errors from the Tigers to take a 25-21 edge.
Despite the loss, Pacific had several stellar individual performances, led by junior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) who tied a career-high with 31 digs in the match. Sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the Tigers' offense with a match-high 19 kills, while junior Kara Uhl (Cypress, Calif.) posted her second consecutive double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Following the tournament, Magud was named to the Fresno State Invitational All-Tournament team. Joining Magud on the all-tournament team were Fresno State's Cheryl Selenak, Kansas State's Stacey Spiegelberg and Sandy Werner and Santa Clara's Anna Cymaylo,Kim McGiven and Crystal Matich. The MVP honors went to Matich.
Pacific will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 2 as the Tigers begin play in the Reno Invitational by taking on the Montana Grizzlies at 7 p.m.
