Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers baseball team fell to Washington, 5-3, on Friday, May 19.
With the loss the Tigers fell to 26-23 on the season, while Washington moved to 34-23.
The Tigers got out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff man, sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, stole second, then advanced to third on a fly out off the bat of senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.). With two outs in the inning, senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) bounced a single up the middle to bring in Ching.
Washington answered back with a sinlge run in the top of the second on an RBI single from second baseman Ryan Anderson.
The Huskies took a two-run lead to a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a walk and two singles. Washington got a leadoff walk by Cory Rickard, then a single from Bradley Boyer sent Rickard to third. One out later, Stevens gave Washington the lead on a ground out to third. Michael Burgher followed with an RBI single as Washington took a 3-1 lead.
The Huskies extended the lead to 4-1 on a double by Matt Hague and a two-out infield single from pinch hitter Brett Kaluza in the top of the fifth.
The score remained 4-1 until the ninth inning, when Washington's Nick Burnham launched a solo home run over the left field wall, making it a 5-1 game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ching started Pacific's rally with a two-out single to center. Berezay followed with a double down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position for sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.). The Pacific first baseman lifted a two-run single into left field, cutting the deficit in half at 5-3.
The Tigers, however, could not push across any additional runs in the inning.
Washington junior Tim Lincecum (12-3) set the Huskies single season record with his 12th win of the season as he allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. Lincecum walked five Tiger batters, while striking out 11. Elliott Cribby allowed two runs on four hits in two innings for his 10th save of the season.
Pacific starter Jason Haar suffered the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year, allowing three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings.
Ching led the offensive attack for Pacific as he was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Pacific and Washington will meet again on Saturday, May 20 at 3 p.m. The game was originally scheduled at 1 p.m. but was moved to accomodate Pacific's graduation ceremonies. The Huskies and Tigers will conclude the series on Sunday, May 21 at 12 p.m.
