Davis, Calif. - A five-run fourth inning was the undoing for the Tigers on Friday, Apr. 7 as Pacific fell to UC Davis, 12-7.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 17-11 on the season, while UC Davis moved to 12-14 overall.
Pacific got on the board first with three runs in the top of the first inning as five of the first six Pacific batters singled.
Sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) opened the game with a single to left-center, then advanced to second on an error. Senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) followed with an RBI single to right-center field. The next Pacific batter, senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) put runners at first and second with a single to left field. After senior Ramon Glasgow (Stockton, Calif.) forced Jackson at third, sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) reached on an infield single to load the bases. Sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.), then delivered a two-run single, plating Berezay and Glasgow to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
UC Davis, however, scored two in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead.
The Tigers tried to rally in the seventh as senior John Devany (Danville, Calif.) had a one-out single. Freshman Alex Zanini (Stockton, Calif.) walked, then freshman Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) reached on a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Ching drove in Devany with a single through the left side, then an error on a ball hit by Jackson allowed two more runs to score to make it 10-6.
The Aggies added two insurance runs in the eighth to make it 12-6.
Pacific's final chance in the ninth inning came with the bases loaded and two outs. Baum hit a mammoth shot down the left field line that hooked foul at the last minute. Baum drew a walk later in the at-bat to make it 12-7, but senior Jake Ross (Friday Harbor, Wash.) bounced out to end the game.
UC Davis starter Michael Potter (1-2) picked up the win as he allowed three runs on five hits in five innings.
Pacific starter Luke Massetti (Modesto, Calif.) suffered the loss (4-3), allowing seven runs on 10 hits and a walk in 3.2 innings.
Ching led the Tigers at the plate with three hits, an RBI and two runs scored.
