San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team closed out regular season action with an 83-45 loss at Cal Poly on Saturday, March 4.
With the loss the Tigers dropped to 6-21 overall and 3-11 in the Big West, while the Mustangs improved to 12-13 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
In a complete reversal of the first meeting between the two teams, the Tigers could not find an answer to the Mustangs' defense or offense, resulting in a 30 point halftime deficit.
Pacific struggled to hit from the field, missing their first ten shots before junior Jerise Freeman (Wichita, Kan.) got the Tigers on the board nearly six minutes into the contest. The Tigers showed some life with a small 6-0 run late in the first half to cut the deficit to 21 points, but a turnovers and a run by the Mustangs built the lead back up to 43-13 to end the half.
In the half, the Tigers shot just 19.0% from the floor, hitting just 4-of-21 shots from the field, two of which came from behind the arc. Unlike the first meeting, the Mustangs were hot the entire half, shooting 44.8% from the floor, but more importantly, 40.0% from distance (4-of-10).
Despite shooting at a higher percentage out of the break, the Tigers could not overcome the Mustang's pressure, as they could only sit and watch Cal Poly increase its lead to a final margin of 38 points.
For the Tigers, sophomore Kelsey Lavender (Lake Oswego, Ore.) was the lone Tigers to hit double figure scoring, netting 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting including 3-of-6 from distance. For the game, Pacific shot 26.9% from the field and 28.6% from behind the arc.
All but two of the Mustang's 14 players etched their names in the score book with points in the game, led by Jennifer Dooley, who had a game-high 16 points. Dooley hit 5-of-13 from behind the arc and 1-of-3 from the line for her 15. Three other Mustangs hit double digits with Courtney Cameron notching 14, Michelle Henke dropping in 13 and Sparkle Anderson adding 12 points to round out the scoring. Cal Poly shot 42.2% from the field and 30.4% from behind the arc while hitting 22-of-28 from the charity stripe.
The Tigers will next be in action on Wednesday, March 8, as they begin Big West Conference Championship action at the Anaheim Convention Center. The No. 8 seed Tigers will have the opportunity to exact some revenge on the Mustangs as they face the No. 5 seed Cal Poly at 12 p.m.
