Sophomore Jason Haar escapes bases loaded ninth inning jam to lift Pacific to 7-6 win over Nevada

Reno, Nev. Sophomore Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) escaped a bases loaded one-out jam in the ninth inning to preserve a 7-6 win over Nevada on Friday, Feb. 24.

With the win the Tigers moved to 8-3 on season, while Nevada fell to 3-7.

Leading 7-6 with a runner at third and one out in the ninth, the Tigers turned to Haar to close out his first game of the season. After walking the third and fourth hitters in the Nevada lineup, Haar struck out Wolf Pack senior Baker Krukow looking on a 3-2 fastball. Haar followed by inducing a fly out from David Ciarlo to end the game.

Pacific started the scoring in the first inning as senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) laced a single to right field. Senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) ripped an RBI double down the right field line to score Jackson, giving Pacific a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers added a run in the second inning as Berezay reached on a error to leadoff the inning. One out later, senior Jake Ross (Friday Harbor, Wash.) plated Berezay with a double to center, making the score 2-0.

Pacific added two runs on two hits and two Nevada errors in the fifth inning. Freshman Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with an infield single, then freshman Alex Zanini (Stockton, Calif.) reached on an error, sending Oliveira to third. Sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) dropped down a bunt and reached on the second error of the inning. Oliveira scored on the play as Ching was credited with an RBI. Jackson followed with a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. A fielders choice off the bat of Berezay drove in Zanini, giving Pacific a 4-0 lead.

The Wolf Pack, however, responded with four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Ciarlo.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning, when the Tigers scored three runs on four extra base hits. Ross got the Pacific rally started with a one-out triple down the right field line. Sophomore Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) followed with a double down the left field line. One out later, Zanini doubled home pinch runner senior John DeVany (Danville, Calif.) to make it 6-4. Then Ching ripped a double to the left field warning track to score Zanini, giving the Tigers a 7-4 edge.

Senior Eric Stolp (Oakhurst, Calif.) held Nevada at bay during the seventh and eighth innings as he picked up the win (1-0). Stolp allowed two runs on one hit and a hit batter in 1.2 innings.

Pacific starter Luke Massetti (Manteca, Calif.) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings.

Nevada's Wesley Dorsett (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

Jackson led the Tigers offensively with three hits, while Berezay and Ross each had two RBI for Pacific.

The Tigers and Wolf Pack will continue their three-game series on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
