Behind a career-high 24 points from senior Mike Webb (Lancaster, Calif.) the Pacific Tigers defeated Cal State Northridge 79-51 Wednesday, February 22. The Tigers hit 14 three-pointers and shot a blistering 59.6% from the field. Pacific improved to 19-7 (9-2 Big West), while the Matadors fell to 10-14 (3-8 Big West). With the victory, the Tigers earned a first-round bye in the Big West Conference Tournament.
Senior Mike Webb's basket in the opening minute of the game was the Tigers' first points. In the first half, Mike had seven three-pointers, leading the Tigers to a 41-22 halftime. He had a career high scoring output in the first half alone, getting 21 points on 7-10 shooting from behind the arc.
Webb would hit his third three-pointer at the 12:00 minute mark, his fourth coming with 8:30 still remaining in the half. He dropped another three with just over five minutes to go and his sixth came just under the five minute mark. Minutes later he would finish his hot shooting with his seventh three-pointer as fellow guard Johnny Gray (Agoura Hills, Calif.)swung the ball over to him in the corner. Webb's 21 points accounted for more than half of the Tigers' 41 points.
Proving the first half wasn't a fluke Webb got back to business in the second half, hitting his eighth of the night with two minutes gone. Webb's eight three-pointers tied for the second most in a game at Pacific, one off of the record nine that Clay McKnight hit against Fresno State in December of 1998. Webb scored his 24 points in just 26 minutes, leaving the game with a quad contusion.
Gray hit his third three-pointer of the game midway through the second half on his way to 18 points. Senior Christian Maraker (Varberg, Sweden) scored six points and had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Tigers shot 59.6% from the field, holding the Matadors to a 31.1% mark, out-rebounding the Matadors 36-25 in the game.
Pacific returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Tigers travel to Cal State Northridge for a 3 p.m. game to be televised by Fox Sports Net West 2.
