Stockton, Calif. - Freshman Ty'Relle Harris (Fairfield, Calif.) held UCLA to just five hits through 8.1 innings as he led Pacific to a 3-0 win over the Bruins on Sunday, Feb. 19.
With the win the Tigers moved to 7-3 on the season, while UCLA fell to 4-6.
Harris retired the first six batters he faced then UCLA's Brett McMillan reached on an error to begin the third inning. The next batter, Ryan Babineau, grounded into a 5-4-3 double play. That proved to be the first of five double plays Pacific would turn in the next five innings, setting a new school record for double plays in consecutive innings.
At the plate the Tigers' offense broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning for three runs on five hits. Sophomore Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) got the inning started with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice from senior Anthony Jackson (Modesto, Calif.) moved Ching to second, senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) drove in the first Tigers' run with an RBI single to right-center.
With Berezay still at first, senior John DeVany (Danville, Calif.) dropped a perfect bunt-single down the third base line to put runners at the first and second. One out later, sophomore Justin Baum (La Mesa, Calif.) doubled into the right-centerfield gap to plate Berezay, making it 2-0. Senior Will Brindza (Sherwood, Ore.) followed with an infield single to drive in Devany and give the Tigers a 3-0 edge.
Harris continued to mow down the Bruins on the mound in the seventh as the Pacific freshman faced just 21 batters through the first seven innings. Harris went out to record the win (2-0) as he allowed just five hits in 8.1 innings. Harris did not walk a batter and threw just 77 pitches.
Junior Curtis Pasma (Madera, Calif.) got the final two outs of the game to pick up his second save of the season.
"Before the game, coach told me that I needed to pitch from in front of the hitters," said Harris. "I told him I was going to go 0-1 to every hitter and I almost did that."
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Feb. 24 as Pacific faces Nevada in Reno, Nev. at 2 p.m.
