STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific women's volleyball team improved to 7-16 on the season with a five-game victory over UC Davis in a non-conference match on Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
While the Tigers improved to 7-16, the loss dropped UC Davis to 4-20 on the season.
Game scores for the match were: 30-24, 28-30, 30-32, 30-14, and 15-10.
Pacific jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match as the Tigers defeated UC Davis 30-24 in game one. The hitting percentages of the two teams told the story in the first game as the Tigers came out with a blistering .429 average in game one, while UC Davis hit just .156. Despite the large hitting disparity, the Tigers trailed 16-13 midway through the game, from that point on Pacific rattled off 12 of the next 15 points to seize a 25-19 lead. During that run, Pacific smacked down nine kills without an error, led by three kills each from sophomores Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Natalia Tomaszewska (Marklowice, Poland).
The Tigers carried the momentum of their game one win into the second game as Pacific held a commanding 27-23 lead. This time, though, it was the Aggies that rose to the challenge by scoring seven of the final eight points of the match to claim game two, 30-28.
Following the break, UC Davis followed the same pattern that worked in game two as the Aggies rallied from a 27-24 deficit to win game three, 32-30.
Facing a 2-1 deficit, Pacific delivered their most dominating performance in a single game this season as the Tigers evened the match with a 30-14 pasting of the Aggies. Pacific held UC Davis to a .083 hitting percentage in the game, while the Tigers notched 15 kills and just three errors on 32 attempts (.375). Anderson and freshman Meagan MimMack (Upland, Calif.) paved the way for the Tigers in the fourth game as the duo combined for nine kills.
The decisive fifth game went back and forth through the first twenty points, as the two teams battled through seven ties and three lead changes. The final tie came at 10-10, when Pacific head coach Charlie Wade called his first timeout. Wade's words must have resonated with the Tigers as Pacific notched three kills and forced two UC Davis errors in the final five points to capture the match, 15-10. Freshman Masha Vaysburg (Livermore, Calif.) capped the Tigers victory with a thunderous kill in the middle to end the match.
MimMack led the Tigers with a career-high 20 kills in the match, while Anderson finished with 19 kills. Tomaszewska and junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.) also finished in double figures in kills with 15 and 11 respectively. Pacific junior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) directed the Tigers defense as she tied a career-high with 35 digs.
Four Tigers finished the match with double-doubles as Anderson notched 10 digs, Tomaszewska grabbed 13 digs and Hilbers picked up 12 digs. Freshman Olivia Riley (Agua Dulce, Calif.) nabbed her double-double with 66 assists and 13 digs.
Nicole Read led the Aggies with 18 kills and 17 digs.
The Tigers will be back in action on Nov. 10 as the Tigers travel to UC Santa Barbara to take on the Gauchos at 7 p.m.
