STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific women's volleyball team concluded Big West Conference play with a three-game loss to Long Beach State on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-20 on the season and 3-11 in Big West Conference action. Long Beach State, meanwhile, moved to 22-5 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
Game scores for the match were: 30-28, 30-27 and 30-21.
The first game featured 13 ties and five lead changes, but it was more a battle of streaks rather than a back and forth affair. Tied at 6-6, Long Beach State scored the next six points in the match to take a 12-6 advantage. Pacific responded immediately with three consecutive points and pulled even at 17-17. The Tigers held a 25-22 lead late in the first game, but Long Beach state scored six of the next eight points to take a 28-27 lead. The 49ers went on to take game one 30-28, despite Pacific out hitting Long Beach State, .192 to .143.
Game two was another close contest as the Tigers once again held a late two-point lead at 27-25. Long Beach State, however, delivered another run of points at the right time as senior Mariko Crum had two kills in the final five points as the 49ers defeated Pacific 30-25 in game two.
Pacific attempted to get back into the match in game three as the Tigers held a 13-9 edge, midway through the game. Another Pacific lead was erased by a fortunate 49er run as Long Beach State scored six consecutive points to reclaim the lead at 15-13. The 49ers never relinquish the lead, taking game three, 30-21.
Pacific sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the Tigers with 18 kills in the match, while junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.) finished with a match-high 17 digs.
Long Beach State got a dominating performance from Alexis Crimes as she notched 17 kills without an error on 25 attempts for a .680 hitting percentage.
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, Nov. 24 as Pacific hosts the 28th Annual Bankers Classic. San Francisco and Houston will begin the two-day tournament at 5 p.m., while the Tigers face Portland State at 7 p.m.
