STOCKTON, Calif. - Sophomore Anthony Brown scored a career-high 25 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field to lead the Pacific men's basketball team (1-0) to a season-opening 75-67 victory over Cal State Bakersfield (0-1) on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
A tightly contested game, there were nine lead changes and five ties. The Tigers took the lead for good on a Brown tip-in with 2:57 left, taking a 62-60 advantage. A three-pointer by Tiger junior Solomon Horsechief (Muskogee, Okla.) with 1:32 left gave the Tigers a 68-63 lead and Pacific would not lead by less than three the rest of the way. Pacific was 7-of-9 from the free throw line over the final :45.
HorseChief scored 13 points for the Tigers, while senior forward Anthony Esparza (Bakersfield, Calif.) added 10 points.
In a back and forth first half, the Tigers were down 9-2 but rallied to take an 11-9 lead. CSUB then outscored Pacific 8-0 to take a 19-11 lead with 13:30 left in the first half. Another 14-0 rally gave the Tigers 25-19 lead on the way to a 35-31 halftime lead. There were nine lead changes and five ties in the game.
Brown's previous career high was 18 points against UC Davis last season.
The Tigers are next in action at New Mexico State on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 p.m. (PT).
