Tigers slam the door on Anteaters, defeat UC Irvine, 3-1

Irvine, Calif. - The Pacific women's volleyball team cemented their first winning streak of the season with a 3-1 win over UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 7.

With the win the Tigers moved to 5-11 on the season and 2-2 in the Big West Conference. UC Irvine, meanwhile, fell to 4-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Game scores for the match were: 30-24, 30-25, 28-30, 30-17.

After winning the final three games against UC Davis on Thursday, Oct. 5, the Tigers continued to roll through the first two games on Saturday, Oct. 7 against UC Irvine. Pacific exploded out of the gate in game one against UC Irvine, scoring 16 of the first 21 points to take a 16-5 lead. Sophomore Natalia Tomaszewska (Marklowice, Poland) led the way for Pacific with three kills during the early run. Although UC Irvine cut the Tiger lead to just five points at 25-20, Pacific closed out game one on a kill from freshman Masha Vaysburg (Livermore, Calif.) to win, 30-24.

Game two saw Pacific come back from an early deficit with two key four-point runs. Trailing 17-14 the Tigers rattled off four straight points to take an 18-17 edge. Pacific claimed the lead on two UC Irvine errors, a kill from sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) and a service ace by freshman Olivia Riley (Agua Dulce, Calif.). Moments later Pacific held a 20-19 lead, when the Tigers burst ahead on two more Anteater errors followed by back-to-back kills from Tomaszewska. Leading 24-19, Pacific coasted to a 30-25 win, taking a 2-0 lead into the break.

UC Irvine put all their remaining energy into a comeback attempt in game three as the Anteaters hit a match-high .372 in game three, but still needed to fight off the Tigers down the stretch to claim a 30-28 win.

The Tigers slammed the door shut on a UC Irvine comeback in game four as Pacific out hit the Anteaters, .351 to .081. Pacific notched 18 of the first 26 points to build an 18-8 lead. Anderson and junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.) led the way for Pacific in the fourth and decisive game as the duo combined for 10 kills and only one error on 18 swings.

Freshman Meagan MimMack (Upland, Calif.) led all attackers as she finished with 17 kills, while Tomaszewska and Anderson each finished with a double-double. Tomaszewska finished with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Anderson had 12 kills and 16 digs.

UC Irvine's Kristin Kelley led the Anteaters with 16 kills. Riverside to take on UC Riverside at 7 p.m.
