Tigers collect 800th program win, 3-1 over Fresno State

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers women's volleyball team reached a new milestone as the Tigers defeated Fresno State, 3-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The win marked the 800th victory in program history. Game scores for the match were, 30-20, 30-27, 27-30, 31-29.

Pacific got out to a quick start in game one as the Tigers took a 10-4 lead in the first game behind three kills from sophomore Kara Uhl (Cypress, Calif.), two kills from sophomore Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.). Pacific stretched its lead to as much as nine points three times, before finally claiming the game 30-20. The Tigers defense was the key to the game as Pacific held the Bulldogs to a -.037 hitting percentage.

The Tigers took game two, 30-27, as Pacific continued to frustrate Fresno State on defense forcing the Bulldogs into a negative hitting percentage for the second consecutive game at -.034. Tied at 26-26, the Tigers scored four of the final five points in the game as senior Ashley Groothuis (Aurora, Neb.) had three of her match-high 20 kills down the stretch in game two.

Fresno State took game three as the Bulldogs held Pacific to a hitting percentage of just .100.

In the decisive game four, both teams posted their best hitting percentages of the match as Pacific hit .273, with 19 kills and just seven errors. Fresno State, meanwhile, hit .238 , with 18 kills and eight errors.

Trailing 29-28, Pacific head coach Jayne McHugh called the Tigers' final timeout. Pacific responded with back-to-back kills from Groothuis to take a 30-29 lead and grab the first match point. Pacific took advantage as senior Sidney Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) delivered her second ace of the match, lifting Pacific to a 31-29 win.

Groothuis led all attackers with 20 kills, while Pacific freshman Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio) had a career-high 15 kills and Bennett finished with 10 kills. THe Bulldogs were led by 12 kills from Angela Wiggins.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17 as Pacific travels to San Francisco to take on the Dons at 7 p.m.
