Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers women's volleyball team got 13 kills off the bench from senior Susan Drollinger as the Tigers defeated Eastern Washington, 3-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Game scores for the match were 27-30, 35-33, 30-25, 30-28. With the win, Pacific moved to 12-9 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 16-7.
Game one was a seesaw battle, featuring 12 ties and six lead changes. Tied 18-18, Eastern Washington took control by scoring six of the next seven points to take a 24-19 edge. Pacific battled back within one point at 24-23 but the Eagles took a 1-0 lead with a 30-27 win.
Pacific and Eastern Washington continued to play a very tight match in game two as the second game had 17 ties. The Tigers held a 29-27 lead, but Eastern Washington proved equal to the task, scoring the next three points to take a 30-29 lead. Pacific senior Sidney Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) pulled the Tigers back even with a thunderous kill on a slide play. Bennett then stepped to the service line and gave Pacific the lead with a service ace. Moments later, tied at 33-33, Pacific sophomore Kara Uhl (Cypress, Calif.) gave Pacific a 34-33 lead with her seventh kill of the match. Sophomore Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.) evened the match with her Pacific's second ace of the game as the Tigers took game two, 35-33.
Following the ten minute break, Pacific jumped out to a 12-6 lead in game three as senior Susan Drollinger (Lake Arrowhead, Calif.) had three of her 13 kills during the first 18 points. The Tigers held the lead throughout game three, stretching the margin to as much as 10 points at 19-9. Eastern Washington got as close as four points at 29-25, however the Tigers closed out the game by forcing an attack error from Lizzy Mellor.
Just as the first two games, the fourth game was nip and tuck. The turning point game with the game tied 24-24 as the Tigers scored back-to-back points on kills by senior Ashley Groothuis (Aurora, Neb.). Leading 29-28 the Tigers closed out the match with a kill from the left side by Uhl.
Groothuis led the Tigers with 24 kills, while Uhl (16), Bennett (13) and Drollinger (13) each finished with double-digits in kills. Mellor led the Eagles with 20 kills.
Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 30 as the Tigers travel to Northridge, Calif. to take on Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m.
