STOCKTON, Calif. – Hispanic Heritage Night at Knoles Field saw the Pacific men's soccer program battle California on Friday evening, falling to the Golden Bears, 3-0, in its non-conference finale at Knoles Field.
Despite a rowdy crowd, Pacific (1-7-2) quickly faced a deficit and could not solve the Golden Bears' (3-3-3) defense, giving the visitors the result at the end of play.
California's Noe Morales found the back of the net in the third minute of the contest to open the scoring. Although tackling the early setback, the Tigers settled in defensively and kept the Golden Bears from adding to their advantage before halftime.
Pacific created opportunities of its own throughout the opening 45 minutes. Sophomore
Josephat Yangyuoru recorded two shots on goal, while senior
Massimo Erfani and freshman
Jackson Montero also tested the California defense in the first frame.
California doubled its advantage in the 64th minute when Lucca Guimaraes finished a chance. The Golden Bears wrapped up the night with a third goal in the 87th minute through Callen Lewis to put the match away.
The Tigers continued to push offensively in the second half, recording four shots and three shots on goal after halftime. Pacific also earned three second-half corner kicks and finished the night with a 4-1 advantage in corners.
Sophomore
Alejandro Caracheo Luna played all 90 minutes in goal for Pacific and made two saves, while California goalkeeper Adam Salama recorded three saves to preserve the clean sheet.
With non-conference play now complete, Pacific turns its attention toward West Coast Conference action. The Tigers open conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 30, hosting Seattle for the first time in a WCC men's soccer match at Knoles Field at 7 p.m.
