BERKELEY, Calif. – The Pacific women's volleyball season got underway Friday night at Haas Pavilion, showing fight but ultimately falling in three sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-11) to California in game one of the Gael-Bear Classic.
The Tigers' (0-1) offense found it tough sledding all night, swinging for a .160 clip. Sophomore
Julia Porath and junior
Nicole Zake found the most success on the team, both swinging for a team-leading six kills – the latter student-athlete of which made her Pacific debut tonight. Porath meanwhile finished the night one kill away from tying her career high.
Returning the topic of Pacific debuts, sophomore
Adeline Sirbu tallied three kills on seven attempts while freshman
Ellie Prindl and graduate
Hanna Vorhies each tallied two. In addition to being a Pacific debut, Sirbu made her first collegiate appearance period after missing the 2025 season due to injury. Each of Sirbu, Vorhies, and Prindl were active on the block – racking up two, one and three block assists respectively.
Splitting the setting duties against Cal (1-0) was the combination of junior
Alessia Couchond and sophomore
Chloe Giehtbrock, finishing the match with ten and eight assists respectively.
However, where the Pacific offense faced a daunting Cal (1-0) defense, the Golden Bears were able to generate a 55-21 disparity in kills and 53-20 setting assists – leading to a .412-.160 hitting percentage advantage for Cal.
Sophomore
Bella Gutierrez made an impact for the Tigers defensively with ten digs. Dating back to last season, Gutierrez has reached double digit digs in four of the last five matches.
Up next, the Gael-Bear Classic continues for the team, heading over to Saint Mary's to face former WCC foe Gonzaga at 2 p.m. The match will not be streamed but fans can follow along via live stats.
