SAN FRANCISCO – Taking advantage with runners on base all afternoon, the Pacific baseball program posted a double-digit run total for the fifth time this season, winning 10-5 over San Francisco in the West Coast Conference series opener on Friday from Benedetti Diamond.
The Tigers (16-23, 8-8 WCC) utilized a trio of three-run rallies to spread across a productive day at the plate against the Dons' (19-20, 10-6 WCC) pitching. Pacific went 9-for-21(.429) with runners on, capitalizing early on to take control of the first game in the Bay Area.
Redshirt junior
Zach Todd turned in the fifth consecutive quality start by a Pacific starter in conference play, pitching 6.0 innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts by Don hitters. Todd tied the most strikeouts he's had against a conference opponent this season after recording the same amount against Seattle on March 20.
Senior
Jake Tandy got the scoring party started with a two-run blast to cap a three-run top of the first for Pacific. Tandy, who has now hit a home run in his third straight conference series, has three career home runs against the Dons and collected a three-RBI day at the dish to lead the Tigers in that category.
For a second straight series, graduate student
Brendan O'Sullivan connected for a no-doubt big fly, going 2-for-4 with a game-high three runs. O'Sullivan launched his third home run of the season as the cherry on top of the Pacific offense in the eighth inning.
Junior
Braeden Schnabel and redshirt sophomore
Robert Orr kept Pacific rallies going throughout the day with multi-hit performances and each reaching base three times safely. All but one Tiger in the starting lineup recorded a hit.
Pacific scored three in the first, third and sixth innings, serving as ample scoring to quiet the Dons' bats early on. USF would make some noise in the late stages following Todd's departure, but the Tigers would limit the damage and hold on for the game one win.
With the victory, the Tigers have matched their conference win total from a season ago at eight. Pacific is two WCC wins away from tying their best conference mark since the 2019 campaign (10-16). Pacific has won five straight conference contests for the first time since 2016.
Pacific and USF will square away for game two of the three-game set on the Hilltop tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
