STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific softball team erased an early four-run deficit to take the 8-5 Sunday afternoon win at Bill Simoni – clinching the program's first sweep of the Broncos since 2017.
The comeback came in the form a 7-0 run that began in the third inning. Down 5-1, senior
Amanda Bricker singled through the left side to bring home junior
Zaedi Tagalog. One batter later, junior
Kaylah Adams used a productive out to score senior
Allie Capello on a fielder's choice that trimmed the deficit in half.
The junior was an integral part of Pacific's (16-29, 4-8 WCC) success all series long, going 3-for-9 at the plate with two RBIs.
Moving to the fourth inning, the Tigers knotted the game on a two-out triple off the bat of Capello to bring home senior
Jordan Hayes and redshirt senior
Olivia Silvestre. It was the first triple of Capello's career and her fifth multi-RBI game this season. The Hawai'i native's ability to plate multiple runners in a game has usually forecasted well for the team as Pacific is 9-5 all-time in games in which she has two-plus RBIs.
Finally in the fifth, Pacific moved in front for the first and final time as Bricker stepped back up to the plate and launched her fifth homer of the season over the left field wall. The senior has felt very comfortable playing in front of the home crowd this season, as four of her five big flies have come at Bill Simoni Field.
A mere two batters later, sophomore
Katelyn Maciel took Santa Clara (22-22, 7-5 WCC) deep for her first collegiate homerun to double the Tigers' lead. In another first, it was the sophomore's first multi-hit game as a Tiger. Finally, a
Jordan Hayes sacrifice fly in the sixth inning brought the score to its finality at 8-5.
Beyond the winning rally, sophomore
Peyton Clifford notched multi-hit game number six this season going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, her eighth of the season. She also plated Pacific's first run of the game to answer SCU's four-run second inning.
Within in the circle, freshman
Carley Mulcahey entered the contest in the third inning and immediately stabilized the game for Head Coach Sam Duran-Kukuk. The freshman worked a near flawless 4.1 innings, only allowing two hits, neither of which came around to score, and one walk. It was both the longest appearance of the season for Mulcahey and the longest she had pitched this season without surrendering a run. She was credited with the win and moved to 2-2 on the season.
Up next on the schedule is the final home mid-week game of the season, set to host Sacramento State on Tuesday at 4 p.m. However, forecasted weather conditions could impact the game, so make sure to follow Pacific softball social media and the Pacific athletics website for any changes.
Should the contest not happen, the Tigers take the diamond on Friday for game one of a three game series at LMU. All four contests are currently scheduled to air on ESPN+.
