Big Flies Boost Pacific Over Santa Clara

STOCKTON, Calif. – A pair of career first homeruns put the Pacific softball program ahead of Santa Clara early and never looked back in Friday night's 7-2 win at Bill Simoni Field.

The first homer came as the exclamation mark of a Santa Clara (22-20, 7-3 WCC) error with two outs that extended the inning. A ground ball went through the legs of the Broncos shortstop allowed freshman Ave Risati to step up to the plate with two on and what followed was the freshman putting the ball well over the left field wall for her first collegiate homerun and a 3-0 Pacific (14-29, 2-8 WCC) lead.

One inning later, junior Zaedi Tagalog took her turn at the dish and pulled her first collegiate homer over the fence in right center field to extend the Tigers lead to four runs.

This season when Pacific has gotten the long ball work, they have been tough to beat going 4-1 this season when hitting multiple home runs in a game. However, the offense was not done as in the fifth Adams got a chance with runners in scoring position and put a ball deep enough into left field that freshman Kelly Whelihan could score. A few batters later a double steal scored the sixth run of the night and finally senior Allie Capello notched her 26th RBI of the season to bring the score where it ended at seven runs.

Beyond the run producers, the Pacific offense clicked all night long as eight of the nine Tigers that took an at-bat got at least one hit while Tagalog and redshirt senior Olivia Silvestre paced the club with two hits each. The multi-hit bit was Silvestre's ninth of the season and Tagalog's tenth.

By contrast, Santa Clara found it tough sledding the whole seven innings and was limited to just three hits – tying for their worst output of the conference season. The reason the Broncos failed to put consistent pressure on the Pacific defense was due to the work of sophomore Kaytee Dahlstrom in the circle.

The sophomore gave up a lead off hit in the first inning and did not concede again until the sixth inning, where she suffered her only blemish. However, outside of that, Dahlstrom was sterling finishing with a complete game and eight strikeouts. The Meridian, California native has been hard to hit over her last three appearances, going four innings-plus in each, allowed three or fewer hits and two or fewer runs on her way to two wins.

Her eight punchouts ties her career high and is the first time she's spun a full, seven-inning complete game. She improved to 3-4 on the season.

Next time out the Tigers will look to clinch the first series win over SCU since 2021. Dating back to last season Pacific has a two-game winning streak against the Broncos and will look to extend it to three games for the first time since the 2017-18 season (four games). First pitch from Bill Simoni Field is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
