DAVIS, Calif. – The Pacific baseball program got off to a good start in its midweek contest against UC Davis, but could not secure the finish, dropping a 6-5 decision in ten innings on Tuesday night at Dobbins Stadium.
The Tigers (12-23) took advantage of some small ball and defensive miscues early on, but the Aggies (16-18) crawled back and clutched up with a walk-off walk in the tenth inning.
While most of the Pacific attack came via hits around the Aggie infield, senior
Rylan Evans got a hold of one for his second home run of the season. The second-inning blast was his first home run since Feb. 19 against Utah Tech. Evans also earned a second RBI with a bases-loaded walk, marking a personal season-high in that category.
Redshirt sophomore
Robert Orr and junior
Derek Bartram collected multi-hit performances in fueling the Tigers' offense.
Redshirt senior
Nathen Nino drew the starting assignment on the mound, tying a career-high 3.2 innings with a pair of Aggie strikeouts. Nino's two strikeouts recorded also represented a season high. Redshirt freshman
Liam Smith (1-3) was handed the loss, despite tying a season-high with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief work.
The Tigers wasted no time getting going offensively, utilizing a two-run first inning and Evans' solo home run in the second inning to jump ahead, 3-1. The seesaw affair ultimately brought the score level to 5-5 after six innings as Kai Mault hit a game-tying RBI single in the sixth frame.
When the sky turned to pitch black and cold, so did the offenses. Not much was going for either side until the Aggies squeaked out the extra-innings victory on a walk-off walk by Houston Hirschkorn. Pacific falls to 1-2 in extra-inning games and 6-6 in one-run games this season.
Pacific looks to shake off the narrow defeat and return to Stockton for some home cooking, hosting Santa Clara for a West Coast Conference three-game set, beginning with Fireworks Night on Friday at 6 p.m. from Klein Family Field.
