CORVALLIS, Ore. – Pacific put up two strong efforts but could not overcome Oregon State in the first two games of the series, falling 6-4 in game one and then 2-1 in game two at Kelly Field on Friday afternoon.
GAME 1
The Tigers (12-28, 0-8 WCC) came alive late offensively to trim a five-run deficit down to two and got the go-ahead run to the plate but could not convert the late opportunity. Leading up to that chance were RBIs from freshman
Kelly Whelihan, and sophomores
Jayleen Scott and
Alyssa Garcia. The freshman jumped on the first pitch she saw to deep left center field to allow senior
Amanda Bricker to score all the way from first base. Scott followed Whelihan's approach and ambushed the first pitch to score the SoCal native from second base. Two batters later, in a pinch-hit scenario, Garcia fought off three pitches before driving her own double to left center field, which brought redshirt senior
Olivia Silvestre to the plate with two outs and the chance to tie or take the lead. The outfielder then made solid contact, but hit it right at a Beaver (17-25, 5-3 WCC) to end the game.
She did, however, get Pacific on the board in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly.
The late push was the culmination of a steady Tigers attack that tallied 12 hits, the most in a game since the final game of the Montana series last month. Under Head Coach Sam Duran-Kukuk, losing a game when reaching double digit hits is a rare occurrence as the team is 18-4 under her leadership and 7-1 this season. Both Bricker and Scott were at the center of the success at the plate, each tallying three hits. For Scott, the three-hits are a career best in a single game and the first multi-hit effort of her season, while Bricker tied her career best for the fourth time and notched her first multi-hit bid since Game Two of the Utah Valley series in March.
Capello also tallied a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 at the dish.
Tigers junior starter
Justice Alcaraz was the pitcher of record, surrendering four runs in five innings of work. She gave up the four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three – she falls to 4-8. Sophomore
Alexa Lewis spun an inning out of the bullpen and gave up two runs on one hit and two walks, but got every out herself, striking out three.
GAME 2
A much quitter game offensively for both teams, Oregon State used two solo homers in the third and fourth innings to clinch the game. Pacific clawed one run back in the fifth off the bat of Silvestre, who singled home sophomore
Peyton Clifford. The game broke a six-game run in which she'd drawn at least one walk but has managed to reach base at least once in every WCC game this season.
Clifford's one hit in the ballgame came as a double, her sixth of the season and the only extra base hit for the team in the game.
Freshman
Sophia Lambaren drew the start and conceded the decisive homers to drop to 0-3. On the game she lasted four innings, giving up the two runs on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Appearing in relief was fellow freshman
Carley Mulcahey, who worked around two walks and a hit in her two innings in the circle, but did not give up a run and struck out one Beaver.
UP NEXT
The series finale against OSU has been moved up from 2 p.m. to 12 p.m. to accommodate potential weather moving through Corvallis. Despite the schedule change, the game will still be streamed on ESPN+.
