SAN JOSE, Calif. – For the second day in a row, the No. 24 Pacific women's water polo program took down a higher ranked opponent as it defeated No. 17 San Jose State in a 15-14 overtime thriller Sunday at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center.
It came after the Tigers (9-6, 1-1 GCC) locked down No. 14 UC Davis yesterday in an 8-7 home win.
Pacific trailed 11-9 in the fourth quarter when goals by junior Laia Marsinach Ortego and freshman Eleni Ikonmou tied it with 2:46 left. After San Jose State (6-11, 0-4 MPSF) scored on a penalty, junior
Ella Cowan tallied the equalizer to send it to overtime.
The game-winner was a strike by Ortega, assisted by Ikonomou to lead 15-14 with 2:00 left in the final frame. It capped a career day for Ortega, who registered six goals and three assists.
Not to be overlooked, junior
Alicia Petkov recorded four goals, while sophomore
Lauryn Lucero netted a pair. Cowan distributed five assists to quarterback the offense.
Of Pacific's 15 goals, 14 were assisted. The Tigers also grabbed five steals in the game including a pair from Cowan.
Junior
Maja Lizy Dulic played the whole way in net and was credited with the win for the second straight day.
Neither team led by more than two goals the entire match. Pacific has now won four of the last five against SJSU.
The Tigers will resume conference play Saturday, March 14 when they host No. 7 LMU at 11 a.m. at the Eberhardt Aquatics Center.
