STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific baseball program battled to the finish line against a crosstown rival in UC Davis, ultimately dropping the contest by a 10-8 margin on Tuesday night at Klein Family Field.
The Tigers (9-15, 1-2 WCC) and the Aggies (11-11, 5-4 Big West) went back-and-forth all night in the non-conference tilt with the visitors holding on narrowly at the end.
All nine Tigers who opened the game reached base safely at least once while junior
Braeden Schnabel led the charge offensively with a three-hit night at the plate.
Redshirt freshman
Liam Smith made a decent start on the mound, collecting a season-high four strikeouts in his outing.
Pacific struck first twice in the first inning, but UC Davis countered with a pair in the next frame to signal a 2-2 score after two innings. The Tigers retook the lead before the Aggies responded with the next three runs to hold their first lead of the night, 5-4 after five innings.
A four-run spot gave Pacific a jolt of energy to go up 8-5 in the seventh inning, but the visitors would not go away, scoring thrice in the top of the eighth and two more to take the lead.
The Tigers would bring on the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but could not complete a comeback bid.
Pacific returns to conference action this weekend, wrapping up the homestand against Gonzaga beginning Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
