STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific baseball program put up a good fight but ultimately fell to Winthrop by an 8-2 margin on Tuesday night at Klein Family Field.
The Tigers (8-12) were within a run going into the ninth inning in the first-ever contest against the Eagles (15-6), who utilized a go-ahead hit in the eighth to eventually take the midweek clash.
Pacific found a gem in the form of junior
Regan Carter, pitching a season-best 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. Freshman
Connor Raridan was sharp in his relief outing, collecting six strikeouts of Eagles in his 2.2 innings of work.
While it was a quiet night for the Tiger bats mostly, graduate student
Brendan O'Sullivan laced a pair of hits from the lead-off spot while junior
Derek Bartram and redshirt junior
Colin Spear earned RBI singles early on in the ball game during a two-run rally.
Winthrop struck twice first in the first, but Pacific responded with a pair in the second inning to tie it up.
Pitching and defense prevailed through the middle innings for both sides putting up zeroes until the eighth inning when the Eagles took the lead with a two-out triple.
Pacific had a chance with runners on the corners with one out, looking to respond in the home half of the eighth, but the visitors escaped the jam unscathed.
The wheels fell off in the ninth, leading to an 8-2 final from Stockton.
The Tigers look ahead to greener pastures as conference play begins Friday at 6 p.m. when the Redhawks come to town for a three-game series at Klein Family Field.
