STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to cut a four-run deficit to just one but could not push the game-tying or winning run across in a 6-5 defeat to California on Tuesday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field.
Senior
Allie Capello launched her second homer of the season with no outs in the seventh inning, plating her and junior
Zaedi Tagalog to cut the California (9-17) lead in half. One batter later, junior
Bailey Boetjer parked her second homer of the season over the left field wall – marking the second time this season Capello and Boetjer have homered in the same game.
After Boetjer's big fly, a walk would bring the winning run to the plate, but the Golden Bears recovered to seal the win.
Prior to the seventh inning fireworks, redshirt senior
Olivia Silvestre launched her first homer of the season in the sixth frame. The three homers Pacific (8-17) hit this afternoon tie for the most in a single game under Head Coach Sam Duran-Kukuk, and the first time since last season against Idaho State.
As has been the case this season, the top of the Tigers lineup provided all the offense as freshman
Kelly Whelihan's single meant the top five hitters in the lineup recorded all five of the team's hits.
Sophomore
Alexa Lewis was tagged with her third loss of the season after starting the first three innings in the circle. In her time, she gave up two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out another five. On the season, she leads the club with 39 strikeouts in the circle.
The remaining four innings was split between freshmen
Sophia Lambaren and
Carley Mulcahey. The former appeared in the fourth and fifth innings and gave up four runs, only one of which was earned. She gave up four hits and a walk, but two Pacific errors allowed Cal to push across the runs.
Mulcahey meanwhile worked the final two frames and posted an unblemished line – giving up two hits, neither of which scored, and struck out three.
Up next for Pacific is a three-game weekend series against Northern Colorado in the WCC/Big Sky Challenge. Pacific went 2-4 in last season's challenge – defeating Portland State on the road but fell to Idaho State at home.
Saturday's action against the Bears will be played as a doubleheader beginning at one and Sunday's finale starting at noon. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
