Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

No. 20 Pacific Drops Pair Saturday at Arizona State Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. – The 20th-ranked Pacific women's water polo program fell to No. 6 Arizona State 17-5 and No. 18 Marist 16-11 on the first of two days at the Arizona State Tournament on Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
 
Freshman Maria Ikonomou stood out for Pacific (1-3) with eight goals on the day including a hat trick against Arizona State (10-1) and a career-high five against Marist (4-1). Junior Laia Marsinach Ortega also scored in both games including a pair against Marist.
 
In the first game against the Sun Devils, junior goalkeeper Maja Lizy Dulic, a two-time All-Conference selection, made her first appearance of the season. She recorded nine saves and a steal, but didn't play the second game due to illness.
 
Pacific fell behind Arizona State early and couldn't catch up. Junior Anna Crum netted a goal in the fourth quarter.
 
In game two, the Tigers trailed Marist 3-0 early when they came back to even it 4-4 late in the first on a goal by freshman Eleni Ikonomou. Pacific was down just 8-7 with 5:19 left in the third quarter after a goal by Maria Ikonomou.
 
Though, Marist created separation late in the third. Sophomore Laurel Cooper tallied nine saves and five steals in net.
 
Six different Tigers scored in the game. In addition to Ortega and the Ikonomou's Pacific garnered goals from junior Ella Cowan, sophomore Penny Cowan and freshman Sophie Pethers.
 
The schedule changed for Sunday. The Tigers will face UC Santa Barbara at 9:30 a.m. (PT) followed by a 12 p.m. (PT) game against Cal Lutheran. Pacific's next home game is Saturday, March 7 at 5 p.m. against UC Davis.
