Pacific Drops Road Opener at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – The Pacific baseball program fell in a tightly-contest series opener by a 5-4 score to Grand Canyon on Friday night from Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.

The Tigers (4-5) took an early lead and battled back-and-forth throughout the late stages of the game, but the Lopes (4-6) ultimately came out on top in the first game of the series.

Senior Blaine French represented an igniter of the offense, recording his third multi-hit performance of the season with a pair of RBIs early on in the contest. Redshirt sophomore Robert Orr crushed his first home run of the season to center field that tied the game up in the seventh inning.

Redshirt junior Zach Todd made his second start of the season, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts to his name. Junior Brady Wilson (1-2) was summoned in relief of Todd and gave up three runs in 3.0 innings of work.

The Tigers opened the scoring on French's two-run single to earn a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Lopes responded in the home portion of the first, cutting the Pacific lead in half.

Todd was effective on the mound until the sixth inning when GCU took its first lead of the night, scoring twice to pull ahead, 3-2.

Orr wasted no time in the next inning, hitting a lead-off, game-tying home run to center to level the score up at three apiece. For Orr, it was his first home run since February 16, 2025, against UC San Diego.

The Lopes continued the back-and-forth affair, collecting a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to go up, 5-3.

Pacific rallied in the eighth inning, sending home one run on a sacrifice fly to make the score, 5-4. The Tigers had the tying run on third base with two outs in the same inning, but the Lopes got out of the jam and ultimately shut the door in the ninth to take game one.

Pacific will regroup for game two of the three-game series against GCU with a first pitch slated for 5 p.m. PST from GCU Ballpark.
