SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With only two games remaining until next week's West Coast Conference Tournament, the Pacific women's basketball team is on the road looking for season sweeps over both Santa Clara on Thursday and San Diego on Saturday.
A win for the Tigers (11-16, 6-10 WCC) would give the team its first regular season sweep over the Broncos (21-8, 11-5 WCC) since the 2014-15 season. Pacific's win in the first matchup this season was buoyed by a lethal three-point attack and a suffocating three-point defense. The team connected on ten triples in that contest, five of which came off the hand of true freshman
Sophia Mindermann.
Since that game Mindermann has continued to be one of the conference's premier shooters – ranking fourth in three-pointers made per game. In two more threes she will enter the Pacific record book for most single-season three-pointers. Her next three meanwhile ties her with former Tiger
Liz Smith for the most single season threes this decade.
Santa Clara, by contrast, was held to a season low 4-for-27 from beyond the arc. In the all-time series Pacific trails 38-32 and 20-11 playing at SCU.
Recent history with San Diego (9-20, 3-13 WCC) has completely favored Pacific who has won six of the last seven matchups and its last two trips to the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Senior
Sydney Ward has been on a tear offensively averaging 15.8 points a game in February – good for sixth in the WCC during that span. The senior has been able to do so with high efficiency, shooting 56.1% in the month, the third best qualifying field goal percentage in the conference (minimum five field goals per game to qualify).
She's also been a force on the boards, ranking seventh in the month rebounding at 7.5 a game.
All of the offense needed a facilitator and sophomore
Daria Nestorov filled that role. In February she has the second highest assist per game mark, averaging 5.2 assists per game.
Both Ward and Nestorov were impact players against USD, scoring 19 and 13 points respectively.
Glancing at the standings, Pacific currently has the nine seed, which would see them play on day one of the tourney but could pass up Saint Mary's to take the eight seed and earn a bye into the second round.
Tipoff against Santa Clara is set for 6 p.m. and San Diego tips at 2 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
