Softball Drops Close Contest to Sac State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Early pressure from the Pacific softball team plated three runs in the first three innings but gave way to a pitcher's duel the Tigers were unable to overcome, dropping the 5-3 decision to Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The first four batters of the Tigers (4-12) lineup recorded all nine of the team's hits, all three RBIs and scored all three runs during the afternoon – giving redshirt senior Olivia Silvestre a ten-game hitting streak. Included in her two hits in the contest was her ninth double of the season, moving her one double away from the national lead in that category.

Junior Bailey Boetjer notched her third multi-hit effort in four games and knocked home another two RBIs, her team-leading 13th and 14th on the season. Over the last four games she's gone 6-for-13 at the plate, which has raised her batting average 63 points to .292 on the season. A double in the third inning gave her her fifth on the season, the second most on the club this season.

Senior Allie Capello continued to come through with runners on board, driving home a run on one of her two hits. Six of the nine Capello RBIs this season have come in the last four contests. The two hits today raised her batting average back over the .300 threshold and ranks third on the team – behind Silvestre and today's hits leader, junior Zaedi Tagalog.

The junior went 3-for-4 at the plate for her second three-hit game in the last four. Since the start of the Mustang Classic, Tagalog has risen her batting average over 100 points to sit at .341 and ranks 17th in the conference.

Junior Ariel Nava was tagged with her second loss of the season after giving up four runs (two earned) in ten batters faced. She was pulled in the second inning in favor of sophomore Alexa Lewis who worked the rest of the game giving up a single run in the sixth and allowing only two hits.

Despite the lack of hits allowed, Sac State (13-2) had consistent pressure on the base paths courtesy of nine walks issued by the Tigers. Nine free passes are the most issued in a single game by Pacific since 2016 and uncharacteristic of a staff that had allowed two or fewer walks in eight straight contests, including only one given up to Sac State last weekend.

Lewis' final line read five innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run (earned), five walks and five strikeouts.

Nava posted one inning pitched, two hits allowed, four runs (two earned) and four walks.

Coming up next for Pacific is its home opening weekend hosting the annual Libby Matson Tournament. The Tigers will play four games across Friday and Saturday against UC San Diego and Fresno State. The first game Friday starts at 11 a.m. All four games will be shown on ESPN+.
